SAAM - Westland Wessex 31B H.A.S

This helicopter entered service with the Royal Australian Navy in 1962. It was the first helicopter to be deployed by the navy in the anti-submarine role. The Wessex served on both aircraft carriers HMAS Sydney and HMAS Melbourne and was retired in 1987.

WEIGHT MT: 7600LB normal, Load 12,600 LB.

PERFORMANCE: 132 Mph Sea level, max climb inclined 1750 FT Hovering ceiling, 7000 FT ceiling service 14200 FT max range 390 miles.

TYPE: Anti Submarine.

HISTORY: During its 25 years of service with the RAN nine of the 27 had crashed.
