This month we are celebrating the Centenaries of Civil Aviation Safety Regulation and the Royal Australian Air Force.
We have added the profile for LT Alan D’Arcy Sutherland. Find it here, or go to the History Group Tab, where you will find it under ‘Biographies’ and ‘Pre WWII.’ Alan Sutherland was one of 12 South Australian airmen who died serving in the AFC or RFC in the Great War, that were omitted from the South Australian State War Memorial.
100 years after Alan Sutherland’s death, research by SAAM History Group Chairman Peter Ingman and former member, the late Chas Schaedel, and much lobbying by SAAM and the Air Force Association (SA), led to the adding of the names of the 12 airmen to the War Memorial. Family descendants of Alan Sutherland were present at the ceremony which took place on Sunday, 18 November, 2018.
In the image above, Alan Sutherland (left) is shown alongside renowned fellow South Australian aviator, Harry Butler, who was also from Minlaton, SA.
The names of all missing airmen can be found here.
