Sorry!! Our Open Cockpits & Engine Run Day POSTPONED

We are very disappointed to announce the postponement of our Open Cockpits and Engine Run Day on Sunday 19th April 2020 due to the Corona/COVID-19 virus situation.
We will re-schedule and advise a new date when the situation allows.

In the meantime we are welcoming visitors as normal but urge you to take all precautions to protect your health and that of other visitors and our volunteers. The Health SA website here contains much useful information and additionally, we would ask you to be prepared to pay for your entry through card pay-wave to avoid the handling of cash.

Jimmy Pink is SAAM’s 2019 Volunteer of the Year!

Jimmy Pink was recognised as SAAM’s 2019 Volunteer of the Year at our Christmas party on 7 December 2019.

Jimmy is very special – you can read about his wartime RAAF and postwar BOAC careers in our April newsletter here http://www.saam.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/PM-Apr19.pdf but since he joined us as a member aged 82 in 2006 he has worked tirelessly on reception duty and as one of our most popular tour guides.

His 95th Birthday Party was held in Hangar 1 on 13th April and a video made of it that you can view by clicking on the image of President David Byrne awarding him the Volunteer of the Year Shield.

Congratulations Jimmy!

Epic Flight Centenary Vimy Mural unveilled!

Our Epic Flight Centenary life-sized Vimy mural, painted by SAAM member and artist Janice Eames over the last three months, was “unveiled” on Wednesday night 3rd July by Dr Robert Black AM RFD MD (Group Captain Rtd), president of the RAAF Association (SA Division) who sponsored the project. About 170 invited guests and members watched the illumination of the mural accompanied by an Illuminart Show by Cindi Drennan. The running of SAAM’s Rolls Royce Merlin engine added atmosphere to the event.

After the show, guests returned to the Museum for hot soup and refreshments and Dr Black and Greg Mackie, CE of the History Trust of SA and chairman of the Epic Flight Centenary Committee, spoke about the Epic Flight and celebrations of the event throughout the year.

Janice Eames then explained how she had achieved such a magnificent outcome assisted by SAAM member Stephen Nitschke, who had projected the image for Janice to outline and fabricated special paint rollers to aid painting on the corrugated surface.

SAAM is very proud of the result, and grateful to the RAAF Association (SA Divsn) for the sponsorship that made it possible.
